More expensive = more quality?

why is there a choice between getting brand name or generic medications?

When you walk into the pharmacy and drop off a prescription, sometimes it will ask the pharmacist to not substitute the medication for the generic version. Your pharmacist may also ask you if you prefer brand name versus generic at the drop off as well. Why is there a choice to be made between the two? Is generic that different from brand name?
